Summary: Frustrating problem with photo backups 2008-12-27
Comment:
I was pleased with this product until I used it. I transfered 200 Gig of old family photos from my computer hard drive. I was unable to open most of them using this Seagate ST903203FGA2E1-RK FreeAgent Go 320 GB drive. The only ones I could open were files with short names; for example, those with maybe about 20 characters. The following is the type of names I give my files:

1925JUL4 Picnic Grandma Christine Middle Name Last Name with Great Aunt Med Resolution.jpg

On this drive, I could not open the file. I also could not rename it or view it as a thumbnail. Basically, I could not do anything with the file, even though its contents were present as indicated by size of file. Fortunately, if I copied the file back to my PC hard drive, I could view it, open it, change its filename, etc. If I shortened the filename and saved it back to the Seagate, the file could be viewed and opened. I don't think I should have to do this; besides the fact that it would take me months to transfer them all back to my computer in small groups (because my PC hard drive is nearly full), rename the thousands of files, etc. What a disappointment! Does anyone know which brand of backup hard drive would allow me to have files with relatively long (but certainly not that long) filenames?

Thanks, Bob

Summary: Perfect Item 2008-12-02
Comment: Even though I have been using the hardrive for only a couple of days so far I am convinced that it was a great purchase.

It comes in an extremely appealing shape - very slim, light and small, seems to be of very high quality and is fast enough for daily use. If you use a rather old computer with low USB power supply the single USB cable might be too less to run the drive; consider buying a Y-cable or a new computer then. For everybody else it's the better solution because the drive occupies only one plug. The delivered cable is short, however, that means better portability.

The software is not powerful but still very useful. As long as you don't expect more than scheduled daily backups for specific files you should be fine.

Mac users might go for the Apple version since it offers FW 400/800 and is a lot faster therefore. It's a bit thicker and heavier though...

Comment: I bought this at Wal-Mart for about the same price. Its perfect.

There is nearly 300 GB of useable free space. is about 1/8 of the size of the 80 GB drive it is replacing. Imagine about two credit cards from top to bottom and the thickness of an iPod classic.

I've got about 18,000 music and video files on it and about 17,000 other documents and it is maybe 1/2 to 2/3 full. It is a great way to back up data and to work between different PCs and Macs.

Summary: Good backup drive! 2008-11-18
Comment: Easy to use, pretty quiet operation. Can handle unplugging without any major hiccup. I got this to use with my windows laptop. I have a really nice 1TB drive for my Macintosh Fantom G-force Quad 1TB Esata / Firewire 400/800 / USB 2.0. This is a very good drive and the access times are short. Write and read times are good enough to watch video from, or if you are making a large backup, to not slow down your main machine too much.

Summary: very slim, very small, very cool looking drive from reputable maker 2008-11-12
Comment: I've had this drive for just a short time, but I know Seagate is a hard drive manufacturer with many years of top notch experience. This drive is much smaller, lighter, slimmer and better looking than most external drives. It is no heavier, larger or fatter than a small pocket planner, and it's brushed metal matches my laptop exactly (black, blue and red also available). The lights indicating power and operation are very similar to the lighted Apple logo on MacBooks. The bottom surface of the drive is a cool slightly rubberized texture that keeps it from slipping around on your desk, but doesn't keep it from sliding easily in and out of pockets. The only thing I wish it had, that some other portable drives have, is drop protection.
