on a price/value scale this is an amazing device.
my only complaints would be you should carry the drivers with you on CD or otherwise.. some versions of windows just dont like this drive. I have seen computers accept it the first time as an "USB mass storage device" and then not after that... so some versions of windows just do not like this drive as a USB plug in. Having the drivers on hand solves the problem.
On computers that recognize the drive? excellence. It is not that fast unfortunately to say run an emulated game system... but for basic function it really does a nice job. Don't expect it to be like a flash drive/mem stick.. more like a hybrid of a traditional drive/mem stick. The fact that it is so small is incredible.
one other complaint ? no case. it should have at least a soft shell case. Obviously people are buying it for portability.. a case would be a nice option. Personally I went to staples and bought a caselogic softshell...Read more

Unless you have tons of photos and MP3 files, a 100 GB hard drive is more than enough to back up all of your data and then some. In fact, even if you have lots of MP3 and digital photos, it will probably be adequate. I think someone complained because it doesn't have 100 gb of usable storage, well that's true of all hard drives. Every drive on the market has software that utilizes a small portion of the drive, so that's a moot point.
I've had the drive about 6 months and it's been quiet and worked perfectly. I haven't noticed any excessive heat as the unit stays relatively cool. The only complaint I have is the lack of a power switch to turn it on or off. That could be a problem, however, I resolved this issue by plugging the Maxtor into it's own surge protector. So when I'm finished backing up files, I simply turn off the surge protector.
Used it maybe 20 times, now only several years after buying it - it is useless,

When I bought this Maxtor 100 GB external hard drive I expected I would be able to use it for nearly a decade with light use and save my video and image files to it. So several months ago while trying to move some files from one computer to another I powered it up and this hard drive started to make a clicking sound and refused to connect to the computer. This was after it had been sitting unused for several months. I was angry and frustrated, having invested what I consider a lot of money in this thing it just stopped working with no warning. I only used it several times a year and had done nothing to it to damage it.
I guess you really begin to value your memories only when you lose them, because all we really have left of the past are photos, video recordings, and documents. In this case they are in digital format inside of an unusable hard drive. This taught me a valuable lesson - don't buy products with a 90 day warranty. If a manufacturer won't stand behind their...Read more
