Three Interfaces for Fast Connections
The Rugged All-Terrain offers speed and versatility with three connection interfaces, letting you use it with almost any computer. The FireWire 800 interface allows for a blistering 800 Mbps data transfer speed, perfect for video editing and other intensive work. FireWire 400 is also supported, which has long been a favorite of Mac users and provides 400 Mbps speeds. The nearly universal USB 2.0 interface is supported as well, which offers a transfer rate of up to 480 Mbps, and is backwards compatible with USB 1.1.
With its driver-free and plug-and-play functionality, exchanging data between Macs and PCs is as easy as it gets--simply plug it into any computer with a USB port and you're ready to go. (The Rugged All-Terrain requires no extra drivers for Windows XP/2000/Vista and Mac OS X operating systems.) It even comes with a power-sharing cable for low-powered USB hubs and computers.
The drive features a spin speed of 5400 RPM, an 8 MB cache, and a transfer rate of up to up to 480 Mbits per second. For additional styling points, the Rugged All-Terrain can be outfitted with additional colorful bumpers that will keep your drive protected. Easy-to-change and durable once on, they are made of the same quality rubber as the original bright orange Rugged sleeve. With the purchase of this LaCie Hard Disk, you will also receive a full year of LaCie's Online Backup service. With this service, the data that you store on your computer will be encrypted twice and uploaded to the offsite data center where they will remain encrypted, maintaining your privacy.
When you sign up for the service, software is added to your computer that looks for new and changed files to update. The service is completely automated and only backs up new and modified files when your computer is idle, so you don't have to do a thing, and your computer's performance will never be affected.
This service lets you upload an unlimited amount of photos, music, video, and documents for a full year. After that you can continue with the service for a low monthly fee. Via fire wire 400 (they changed to fw800 after this one) I run my system off the Lacie giving me more space and speed, at least it seems faster. Configuring the mac to do this was easy by looking up "running a mac externally" on a search engine and finding a how to or a you tube how to.
The hard drive runs mildly warm and after a month its still working great.
I looks and feels rugged like I might be able to drop it and keep going, but
I'm not going to test that part.
I'd like it if they had a 1tb this same size I guess this will come with time.
I am very happy with this for now.
Initially the drive worked perfectly. Speeds were quick and it connected to my Macbook Pro immediately. [However, the supplied FW400 and FW800 cables from Lacie are both chunky and do not fit well. A slight bump will dislodge the cables causing you to lose whatever you were doing.]
A couple months in, I noticed that the FW400 and FW800 slots are both loose. Now the FW800 doesn't even connect to my computer. Despite the claim by Lacie that this drive is an "rugged all-terrain" External HD, it can't even hold up to the rigors of a studio environment. One that involves vibration-free desks, ideal temperatures and zero humidity.
I have since purchased a G-drive Mini to replace this finicky Lacie Drive. At about the same cost, the G-drive is much better made and I have had zero problems with it.
