We do not abuse our hard drives, they are not transported, only used for backing up with Time Machine on our Macs using Snow Leopard. We have several networked Mac computers, and every Iomega external hard drive has failed within 2 years. One was replaced by Iomega, but that one frequently has to be reformatted. We have followed the reformatting instructions on Iomega's website, changed cables, plugged directly into the USB port on the computers, but nothing has helped. The replacement Verbatim drives seem to be trouble-free, quiet and reliable. Sorry Iomega, but I simply can't recommend your external hard drives. 8 of 8 people found the following review helpful: This review is from: Iomega Prestige 500 GB USB 2.0 Desktop External Hard Drive 34929 (Gray) (Personal Computers) Buyer Beware:
Bought this external hard drive from Amazon in March of 2009. Here it is September, 2010 and this hard drive has already gone out. Save your money, and don't buy this product. Guido T. This review is from: Iomega Prestige 500 GB USB 2.0 Desktop External Hard Drive 34929 (Gray) (Personal Computers) I was pleasantly surprised by the build quality of the drive. Its constructed out of aluminum and has a nice sturdy feel to it. It installed no problem and within minutes I was backing up my desktop PC. I burned about 200G to it without issue. I also like the fact the there is no preinstalled software on the drive. I prefer to choose my own backup programs (Goodsync). However if you want the IoMega SW you can download it. I plan to keep it powered on and spinning for a few days to flesh out any mechanical problems. Take note that this drive neeeds external power and has some "heft" to it. So if your looking for a truly lightweight portable drive you should move on. If I encounter any problems I'll update my review. At this point it seems like an excellent buy...
