Summary: Review of iomega hard drive and support 2010-03-09
Comment: Had problems with the top popping off like all these other reviews. I sent it back to Amazon and got a replacement. Placed my valuable data on the drive, and subscribed to Mozy online backup service to backup my information (which obviously takes a long time to complete). While backing the data up, my drive failed (began screeching and eventually would not be recognized by my computer), so I contacted iomega about replacing the drive and recovering my data that had not been backed up. After speaking with a few customer reps, they said they would not do data recovery, only drive replacement. I pushed them on this and they were not going to budge.
This doesn't seem like a good way to run a business, and is certainly not a good way to treat a customer. I faithfully attempted to backup my data (as they remind you over and over), and during that process, the drive failed. This is after almost zero use. This problem was exclusively of their creation, and they are not willing to backup (get it), their own product. I am not some rube who thinks that they should save my behind because I wasn't prepared...I know how important it is to backup, and I do it fairly religiously. It's just in this case, I'd really run out of room and needed more space so I could get everything backed up. This is clearly an area when iomega has caused the problem, and is unwilling to fix it. It has caused me a fair amount of stress, and at this point there is nothing I can do but shell out the money to do data recovery. Worst of all, is that iomega does do data recovery. They just don't cover it in their warranty, so you have to pay. Their drive failed after almost no use, and still, all I get is replacement. As for the drive itself:
Pros:
- looks good
- nice size, not too big
- relatively quiet (when it wasn't making a screeching sound when it began to fail)
- Worked well for the few days it actually worked for me
- Plugged it into my Mac and it was ready to go
- Probably others but didn't use it long enough to tell.
Cons:
- two unrelated major defects causing two exchanges
- If you run it via USB, they company says you need to use two usb ports on your computer. If you have an early Intel MacBook pro, this won't work b/c there is only one USB on each side, and iomega does not supply an adaptor.
- Drive failed after only a few hours of continual use (need I say more?).
- Customer service was largely unhelpful. I had to explain and re explain what was going on, what had failed. At times customer service seemed to be annoyed with me. I don't like feeling like that. I just want to get my data back.
I would love to love this product, but it has failed me, and in the process, iomega has failed me. I do not think I will be doing any more business with them...their priority does not seem to lie with the customer.
Update: I just received my replacement drive, and it appears that it is not a new device, but a reconditioned one. I'm going to send it back, and I think I'm going to ask for a refund at this point. I don't think iomega is interested in what is best for their customers.
Customer Rating:
Summary: Only worked three weeks 2010-03-07
Comment: Wanted a reliable backup for my pictures on my Mac Mini. The backup advertised it is compatible with MAC. It was, but after less than three weeks it did not work. Luck for me it quit before my Amazon return date. Back it goes.
Customer Rating:
Summary: Good small and fast drive as you would expect from Iomega 2010-02-25
Comment: It is small for its capacity, it is the cheeper of its kind and it is fast with a impressive selection of connection with USB / fire wire 400 and 800.

Summary: A nifty product 2010-02-22
Comment: Works great with mac - 3 cables, nice and fast. Really easy to use. I got another one (250gb) a few weeks later I liked it so much!
Customer Rating:
Summary: iomega ego garbage 2010-02-19
Comment: Cover continues to fall off and the Iomega is DEAD after 3 weeks. I tried to use Iomega's customer support. To talk to real person sets you back $25 per occurrence and the on line chat is only available Monday thru Friday from 7 am- 7pm mountain standard time. This is one of the worst products I have ever owned. I wish I could up load a photograph of the case. The cover is glued on and the interior shape is slightly different form the cover meaning they will never line up any stay together. When I try to link up my the hard drive to my computer, the Iomega makes a horrid chipping sound and never syncs. I got 3 backups out of it and now nothing. It worked for 3 weeks, I got 3 backups out of it and now I can't contact customer service. Save yourself the trouble and DO NOT PURCHASE the Iomega ego portable hard drive.
