sometimes it will connect but most of the time it wont. this item was a huge ripoff. I would recommend just to pay a little more for a working product.

I bought this hard drive a couple days ago because it was affordable, had lots of space and i could use the firewire 800 with my MacBook Pro. When i first got it, it ran like a champ. The speeds were great, but not as fast as they should be. That wasn't the pant that bothered me tho. After about 2 days, i started transferring some large files over to it to store. What ended up happening was the hard drive would start to halt the copying process (not with all files/folders). It eventually ended up freezing the Finder. I have NEVER had my Mac freeze. I had to restart my computer every time it happened. I eventually ended up reformatting 4 times!!! Still did the same thing. I now know why this hard drive is so cheap. It's crap. I didn't try it with Windows however. Oh, and now, even using the Firewire 800, the speeds are INCREDIBLY slow. I might just return this thing.
