This item works good and is reliable. This product is NOT portable. If by portable you mean "can be taken places and you don't mind the extra setup and weight", then it's portable. This item has an 8"x4" footprint, weighs at least 8lbs, and requires external power. There is no button on the front for easy backup-to-disc feature. This product is not fast either. To transfer 20G of music this machine took 30 minutes. I don't mind that this was falsely advertised, nor do I mind the extra effort, but I would have preferred something I could take and go without wrapping cords. (As the machine is running, it is heating up quick too!) I was expecting USB powered like iPod and an index card sized footprint. I am disappointed, but I needed this item quickly. For the price I guess you can't argue. If you want something the size of your hand and USB powered only...DON'T get this. Otherwise it's working fine at the moment.
